Illustration Process for my Tribal Penguin

Hi Everyone & Happy Friday!

in this post I will share in detail from start to finish my Penguin illustration process.

First of I trace my penguin and all it's tiny details in pencil, once I am done I grab my Rotring Rapidograph pens and retrace the whole illustration with care, patience and attention to all my fine line details steady pulse is a must here! I use tips 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mostly.

Once I have retraced all the outlines with my pen I scan it and save a copy for adding color later in Adobe Illustrator.

I then move on to doing my black and white version by starting to fill in the shapes and spaces with black ink.

Once it feels like it's done, again I scan it and save this version, which will be my final black and white version.

Moving on to color. I upload my 1st outlined scanned version to Adobe Photoshop first to clean it up.
I end up re-tracing and re-drawing the whole illustration practically all over again. I am a big perfectionist and I want my lines to be as clean and accurate as possible, I currently do not have a great scanner yet so this is why I have to re-trace some parts again on Photoshop, double the work, double the fun! And yes, patience lots of patience, but when doing something you love the extra work does not really matter.
By the way I work with a Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet and am saving up to get the Wacom Cintiq which would allow me to draw directly to the screen and convert my illustration traces straight to vector lines and save me all this cleaning up process.

Ok by now I have my cleaned up version ready for Adobe Illustrator for the fun color adding part!
I open my .jpg or .png version on Adobe Illustrator and use the "Live Trace" tool adjusting the settings to the one that will go best to my design, to convert all my lines to vectors. works like magic!

I then select my color palettes to proceed with color adding. There are a few ways of adding colors, my favorite one is the "Live Paint Bucket". I select my color per area and then live paint one by one by sections.

I keep going, one by one until I fill in each space accordingly to my chosen color palette.

And Voila! this Little guy is done :)

The above version is called "Ethnic Penguin" my black and white version ended up looking like the one below and I named it "Tribal Penguin"

My First Art Exposition at Wyndood for Art Basel Miami Week

Hello Everyone! This is my first post of the year and a very exciting one!

  The year 2013 ended in a very exciting way when I was selected by Vividly to display several of my artistic items at Wynwood for Miami Art Basel Week! It was an honor, that out of 70 qualified artists, they chose only 3, myself included.

 

 Vividly is an art community and fashion house for those who love well-made clothes that express their passion, vivacity, and love of art. They partner with visual artists to create garments that incorporate their art, providing a new way for artists to share their work.

Every piece is made in the USA, using high quality fabrics that are a pleasure to wear. Each simple silhouette tells a story or conveys an emotion just what you’d expect from these ultimate statement pieces.

The founders of this amazing company are Sabrina & Silvia Scandar, Sisters born and raised in Miami, Florida. They founded Vividly to foster creativity and promote self-expression through clothing.

  Not only did I have 2 of my clothing pieces there for exposition, I also had the opportunity to have my original framed prints there for expo and sale as well.

It was a fun busy night, with great people, beautiful ambience, and delicious organic appetizers. This provided for an overall great cultural and artistic experience given all of the other very interesting art expositions displayed.

Pamela Gallegos Interview by Kess InHouse

Indulge your cultural senses with Pamela Gallegos!

Pamela Gallegos, formally Pom Graphic Design has used her indulgent sense of travel & adventure to create the beautiful artwork we are proud to carry at Kess Inhouse. From a young age, she started with doodles and eventually progressed into aztec, ethnic, and even native motifs. Pamela has been inspired by different cultures like the Inca culture. This totally makes sense as her artwork is beautifully crafted and inspiring! We thought today of all days would be the perfect day to give you the background story on our beautiful artist Pamela. Why, you may ask? Today is Pamela's birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAMELA! After being born and raised in Peru and relocating to the US, Pamela truly has a sense for many different cultures, patterns, and colors!

We feel privileged to be feature Pamela on all of our product line and to have had her take time from her busy artistic schedule to answer some Q&A's that I'm sure all of her fans and our KESS fans are dying to read!


KIH:  What is your first memory as an artist? 
PG: Probably since high school when I was day dreaming and doodling in any piece of paper, chair, table or object I found. Going further on explaining a little bit more about myself I have always had this traveling sense of adventure in me from the time that I was old enough to travel by myself and in the company of good friends. I decided to move to the states because I felt like I needed more to grow personally. I have always been very interested in learning more about different cultures and different ways of living life. Both have always intrigued me. I took the big step of leaving my country and family at the age of 19. It was not so difficult going by myself; actually that was the adventurous part. The hardest part was leaving my family. Once I got to the US I worked non-stop for one year, entered college and received my Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Since then I have been passionately pursuing my career as an artist.

KIH:  What is your creative process? 
PG: I create my art with rapidograph, pencil, oil, acrylics, markers and colors.

In my art I communicate life, energy and forces of nature in its abstract form. You can see many organic and geometrical multicolor or black and white shapes in each piece, with tribal, Aztec, ethnic and native motifs as well.
I also get my inspiration from different cultures and art movements. For example, some of my work has certain influence from my Inca culture, and native icons. These influences are not only from nature elements, but from animal elements as well. My art also has some Egyptian influences. An art movement that inspires some of my work is Art Nouveau, especially the organic shapes and fluidity that you will observe in my art.

KIH: What was your first medium? 
PG: oils & canvas

KIH: What is your favorite medium? 
PG: Rapidograph & bristol paper

KIH: What is your favorite color right now? 
PG: turquoise always

KIH: What common threads do you find show up in your work? 
PG: Usually abstract representations of nature; the sun, the moon, spirals, rain, fire, river, wind, tribal motifs, geometric and organic shapes as well.

And all of those elements happen to be with me in my art because at a very young age I started to feel a very strong connection with the spiritual world, and started to listen to my body and the energy that flows in it. It made me discover many things about people, the whole universe and myself.
I have many theories about life, and the path of self- discovery. Nature is my life, the harmony that can be created in each sense, each smell, each sensation, the cycle of life, the wind, rain, trees, the moon, Mother Earth is the maximum expression of my inner soul and life where I can find my inner balance whilst interacting harmoniously with all the elements and forces of life, while at the same time experimenting a feeling of unity with it all.

 KIH: Where do you do most of your work? 
 PG:In my small studio at this place called hogar ♥

In Her Own Words: Artist Pamela Gallegos

 We invited a series of designers, artists and outstanding bloggers to write about their vision, work and inspiration and created a new category on Attire Club called “In Their Own Words”. Each week a new person takes the stand and discusses beauty and creativity from their perspective.

Pamela Gallegos is a fantastic visual artist whose works catch your eye the moment you see them. The fabulous colors, textures and shapes she uses speak about a wonderful world, a world in which cultures and dreams mix. Her works appear to us as tangible dreams and are characterized by a certain sensibility. We asked Pamela to write about her work and inspiration and to our joy she agreed. In this article, written exclusively for Attire Club, she discusses her background in Peru, how she became an artist and where she finds the things she ends up expressing in her creations.

Her designs do not serve the sole purpose to be displayed on a wall, she uses them as prints for practical objects as well. By looking at her designs, we can learn that the arts do not live separate but meet in a confluence of beauty and style.

Here’s what she wrote:

My World, My Mind, My Inner Soul

I was born in Miami, Florida then moved back to Lima, Peru when I was 5 years old. I went to school in Peru and lived there until I was 19 years old. At that time I decided to move to the United States seeking more independence and adventure. I do remember that from a very young age I have always enjoyed doodling and being in the presence of nature and family.

Living in a country with such a rich culture is where it all began. I had this desire for travel and adventure since I was very little, and once I set foot in my first mystical trip, I started to feel the connection between the harmony in nature and the art within it, so then is when I decided to manifest it in my work. I communicate my art through oil & acrylic paintings, drawings in pencil or rapidograph, and in 2003 I took the step to take it digital as I achieved my career as a Graphic Designer in the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.

My art focuses on natural elements in all its force. You can see many organic and geometrical shapes in each piece. I communicate life, energy and forces of nature through my art. I chose to paint in oils and acrylics and do illustrations in pencil, charcoal and rapidograph pen.

I also get my inspiration from different cultures and art movements. For example, some of my work has certain influence from my Inca culture, and native icons.
