Before tribal art was watered down for the masses to adorn the biceps of Frat-Bro's and the sides Del-Taco cups, it was popularized by indigenous people around the world for thousands of years as a way to tell a story about their legacy and culture through beautiful, intricate patterns.
Peruvian artist Pamela Gallegos, creator of POM Graphic Design, has embarked on a one-woman quest to reclaim tribal art so that it can grow to become more associated with the elements and nature by snatching it out of the fat sweaty hands of Juggalos everywhere.
This week, we were fortunate to catch up with Pamela, as she discusses the inspiration and heritage behind her particular style of art.

POW: The colorful patterns featured in your artwork have a distinct textile appearance, triggering mental images of dashikis, chullos, and tapestries. Is this intentional, and what would you say inspires this?
PAMELA: I really don’t feel that it is intentional, however I understand I have a distinct style that is inspired by my cultural background. This influences the end result of my pattern designs and illustrations. I am a Peruvian who was born in the US, but then moved back home around the age of 5 where I lived until I was 19. I then came back to the US to continue my Graphic Design career.
I started travelling within my country at a young age. During these travels I was completely captivated and “awe-inspired” by all that my fascinating culture had to offer. I visited mystical and majestic places such as Machu Picchu and Marcahuasi just to name a few. This played a big role in the development of the artist that I have become today. Travelling can be very inspiring, fulfilling and awakening.
In most of my illustrations and patterns you see not only a variety of colors and shapes, but also elements of nature in some abstract iconic way.

POW: Several photographs on your Facebook page showcase your ability to create intricate geometric patterns by hand. How long do one of these illustrations take to complete, and are you ever discouraged when thinking of all the detail that it will require?
PAMELA: It depends, but usually they take me about 2 weeks maximum to complete. The detailed and intricate aspect of my art is the most fun part to me. Even when my hand starts cramping and loosing all sensitivity I keep going! It is my happy place, where I can let my mind wonder freely.
About my process, I start off by pencil not knowing exactly where I am going but always finding a way, creating harmony in my illustrative journey. Then I finish it of with Rapidograph technical pens and after that comes the digital component. I detail my design process step by step in my blog if you would like to check it out.
Mostly my designs are done freehand but from time to time I use tools such as a compass and rulers. What I enjoy the most is freehand illustration where my hand has a mind of its own and it’s singing and dancing to its own compass. I am never discouraged when I consider the intricacy of my work. I love it!

POW: As a Graphic Designer with a huge body of illustrative work, was there ever a time when a client was skeptical about your abilities to create something a little more tame/boring than what your artistic style dictates? If so, how did you overcome their apprehension?
PAMELA: Well, as an Artist/Graphic Designer I understand that what the industry demands from time to time is not exactly the “out of the box” artistic views that I express and that sometimes we got to go by standards, rules and trends. Most of the time I do accomplish and deliver what my clients require, however sometimes, if not most of the time, I must admit I do let my mind wonder off a bit more. Most of the time they end up loving it even if it’s not what they envisioned at the beginning.

POW: As someone who relies heavily on word of mouth, self-promotion, and trade/art shows to sell your creations, has showcasing your work as an artist on Prints On Wood allowed you to generate more interest among newer fans on a more national level?
PAMELA: Definitely yes! Fans and friends love to see a variety of products. I consider your Prints On Wood to be spectacular, full of bold and vibrant colors; just as the artists would like to see their artwork produced.

PAMELA: Of course, it is always delightful when we get to talk about the inspiration behind each design. I have always been captivated by the romanticism associated with the idea of having a “Soul Mate”. As I created this piece of art, I was inspired to reflect the connection of the two souls adding my tribal touch.

Pamela Gallegos, formally Pom Graphic Design has used her indulgent sense of travel & adventure to create the beautiful artwork we are proud to carry at Kess Inhouse. From a young age, she started with doodles and eventually progressed into aztec, ethnic, and even native motifs. Pamela has been inspired by different cultures like the Inca culture. This totally makes sense as her artwork is beautifully crafted and inspiring! We thought today of all days would be the perfect day to give you the background story on our beautiful artist Pamela. Why, you may ask? Today is Pamela's birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAMELA! After being born and raised in Peru and relocating to the US, Pamela truly has a sense for many different cultures, patterns, and colors!

We feel privileged to be feature Pamela on all of our product line and to have had her take time from her busy artistic schedule to answer some Q&A's that I'm sure all of her fans and our KESS fans are dying to read!

KIH: What is your first memory as an artist?
PG: Probably since high school when I was day dreaming and doodling in any piece of paper, chair, table or object I found. Going further on explaining a little bit more about myself I have always had this traveling sense of adventure in me from the time that I was old enough to travel by myself and in the company of good friends. I decided to move to the states because I felt like I needed more to grow personally. I have always been very interested in learning more about different cultures and different ways of living life. Both have always intrigued me. I took the big step of leaving my country and family at the age of 19. It was not so difficult going by myself; actually that was the adventurous part. The hardest part was leaving my family. Once I got to the US I worked non-stop for one year, entered college and received my Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Since then I have been passionately pursuing my career as an artist.

KIH: What is your creative process?
PG: I create my art with rapidograph, pencil, oil, acrylics, markers and colors.

In my art I communicate life, energy and forces of nature in its abstract form. You can see many organic and geometrical multicolor or black and white shapes in each piece, with tribal, Aztec, ethnic and native motifs as well.
I also get my inspiration from different cultures and art movements. For example, some of my work has certain influence from my Inca culture, and native icons. These influences are not only from nature elements, but from animal elements as well. My art also has some Egyptian influences. An art movement that inspires some of my work is Art Nouveau, especially the organic shapes and fluidity that you will observe in my art.

KIH: What was your first medium?
PG: oils & canvas

KIH: What is your favorite medium?
PG: Rapidograph & bristol paper

KIH: What is your favorite color right now?
PG: turquoise always

KIH: What common threads do you find show up in your work?
PG: Usually abstract representations of nature; the sun, the moon, spirals, rain, fire, river, wind, tribal motifs, geometric and organic shapes as well.

And all of those elements happen to be with me in my art because at a very young age I started to feel a very strong connection with the spiritual world, and started to listen to my body and the energy that flows in it. It made me discover many things about people, the whole universe and myself.
I have many theories about life, and the path of self- discovery. Nature is my life, the harmony that can be created in each sense, each smell, each sensation, the cycle of life, the wind, rain, trees, the moon, Mother Earth is the maximum expression of my inner soul and life where I can find my inner balance whilst interacting harmoniously with all the elements and forces of life, while at the same time experimenting a feeling of unity with it all.

KIH: Where do you do most of your work?
PG:In my small studio at this place called hogar ♥

In Her Own Words: Artist Pamela Gallegos

We invited a series of designers, artists and outstanding bloggers to write about their vision, work and inspiration and created a new category on Attire Club called “In Their Own Words”. Each week a new person takes the stand and discusses beauty and creativity from their perspective.

Pamela Gallegos is a fantastic visual artist whose works catch your eye the moment you see them. The fabulous colors, textures and shapes she uses speak about a wonderful world, a world in which cultures and dreams mix. Her works appear to us as tangible dreams and are characterized by a certain sensibility. We asked Pamela to write about her work and inspiration and to our joy she agreed. In this article, written exclusively for Attire Club, she discusses her background in Peru, how she became an artist and where she finds the things she ends up expressing in her creations.

Her designs do not serve the sole purpose to be displayed on a wall, she uses them as prints for practical objects as well. By looking at her designs, we can learn that the arts do not live separate but meet in a confluence of beauty and style.

Here’s what she wrote:

My World, My Mind, My Inner Soul

I was born in Miami, Florida then moved back to Lima, Peru when I was 5 years old. I went to school in Peru and lived there until I was 19 years old. At that time I decided to move to the United States seeking more independence and adventure. I do remember that from a very young age I have always enjoyed doodling and being in the presence of nature and family.

Living in a country with such a rich culture is where it all began. I had this desire for travel and adventure since I was very little, and once I set foot in my first mystical trip, I started to feel the connection between the harmony in nature and the art within it, so then is when I decided to manifest it in my work. I communicate my art through oil & acrylic paintings, drawings in pencil or rapidograph, and in 2003 I took the step to take it digital as I achieved my career as a Graphic Designer in the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.

My art focuses on natural elements in all its force. You can see many organic and geometrical shapes in each piece. I communicate life, energy and forces of nature through my art. I chose to paint in oils and acrylics and do illustrations in pencil, charcoal and rapidograph pen.

I also get my inspiration from different cultures and art movements. For example, some of my work has certain influence from my Inca culture, and native icons. -new- Illustration Process for Elephant Tribal

Rotring rapidograph pen 0.2 & 0.4

After finishing my illustration, I proceed to scanning it and editing any flaws in photoshop, where I later add the color. Whole process of editing and color adding takes me about 5-7 hours. Illustration of interior of elephant took me 2-3 days. But I had tons of fun with it! :)

Logo Illustrations

Here I am creating a logo for a seafood company. They wanted something simple and artistic.
I started creating some abstract fish illustrations which then I scanned and recreated in Adobe Illustrator.

My Illustration Process

Hi Everyone!

This is one of my tribal illustrations break down in 3 parts. It took me 2 days to finish it. I love filling in every single space with a different element. You can see many nature elements such as rain, fire, the sun, waves and more for your eye to interpret.

I use staedtler rapidograph pen or rotring rapidograph pen 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8. For all of
my illustrations.

After im done with my tribal illustration I put in my graphic design skills into it to turn my illustration into posters, iPhone cases & more :)
